Principal; Consulting Engineer

Mr. Harris is the Principal Civil Engineer responsible for consulting on the company’s municipal, residential, commercial, and industrial development projects located throughout North Carolina. During the past 29 years. He has specialized in water, sewer, environmental and storm water, as well as, land planning and construction administration. Due to his experience, he serves as an expert in all aspects of land development, Due Diligence and Feasibility Analysis. Mr. Harris has been designing sanitary sewer and potable water systems and their extensions for numerous municipalities across North Carolina for more than 29 years. As a leader in the development of environmentally sound storm water treatment and attenuation, he is well versed in the new technologies regarding pollutant removal designs for cleaning up our streams and lakes.

Mr. Harris’s previous experience includes time in the following responsibilities; sanitary sewer mapping catalogue for the City of Rocky Mount, (Department of Public Utilities) Staff and Design Engineer with the Town of Cary, Engineering Department and, Design Engineer with the NCDOT Hydraulic Special Studies Unit. Mr. Harris has also served as a Private Consultant to numerous other government entities such as; Durham County Department of Engineering, Town of Rolesville, Town of Rich Square, Town of Jackson, Woodland and the Town of Sharpsburg. This experience gives him the unique in-sight of having worked for both the private consulting entity as well as the government entity. Mr. Harris has worked with these governments to design and construct projects ranging in size from small water distribution extensions to major sanitary collectors such as the 3.5 mile, 54” Black Creek outfall for the Town of Cary, and a 4-MGD Pump Station for Durham County. Responsibilities have included coordination of planning and feasibility studies, plan design documents, environmental and regulatory permitting, formal bidding, construction management/administration and final certification sign-off and approval.

Mr. Harris has been a proven successful business man operating his firm, “John W. Harris, P.E. Consulting Engineer Inc.” which he founded just after receiving his Professional License in 1981. This is 29 years of managing and coordinating architects, engineers, environmental studies, surveyors, attorneys, government agencies, developers, and contractors with both formal and informal construction projects.

Additionally, Mr. Harris has been:

    Bass Vocal in Choir since 1996
  • Scout Master BSA-Troop 33 from 1983 to 1996
    Eagle Scout BSA-Troop 108, Rocky Mount
  • Volunteer Youth Baseball Coach since 1981 with both the City of Raleigh Parks and Recreation and the Wake County Homeschool Warriors Middle School Club Team

Senior Staff Engineer

Mr. King is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of North Carolina and has over 12 years of relative construction and design experience. During his career Mr. King has designed and managed a variety of private and public works projects including hard utility extensions.

Before joining Harris Engineering as a Senior Project Engineer, Mr. King was Development Manager for Duke Realty Corporation from May of 2006 through June of 2009. The Development Manager position is unique in that it provides opportunities to manage and coordinate with architects, engineers, environmental scientists, surveyors, attorneys, and land planners. The goal of the Development Manager is to successfully acquire raw land, estimate construction costs, evaluate alternatives for infrastructure and ultimately entitle and construct large scale office parks. In short, Mr. King managed the construction of water and sanitary sewer utility extensions associated with Walnut Creek Business Park in Raleigh and Phase III of Perimeter Park in Morrisville. Over four miles of water and sewer extensions were constructed to serve these projects.

Prior to joining Duke Realty, Mr. King was a Project Manager at the John R. McAdams Company. As Project Manager, Mr. King managed the design of large-scale residential and commercial projects within the greater Research Triangle Park area. Each of these unique projects required sanitary sewer and potable water extensions. While at the McAdams Company, Mr. King managed the design of over 15 residential and commercial projects in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and Wake Forest.

Mr. King began his career at Tierra Incorporated in Raleigh. He was quickly promoted from draftsman/staff engineer to project manager responsible for monitoring and managing subsurface investigations and design tasks associated with a range of civil works projects. Mr. King was also responsible for Quality Assurance management during construction of specific projects.

Bryan Harris

Design Technician

Bryan Harris is our Senior Engineering Technician and has been with the firm since year 2000. He is well versed in AutoCad as well as a high level of technical expertise in Environmental Design Concepts. Bryan is an Apache Longbow Aviator and has been a member of the North Carolina National Guard for the past 10 years. He has bravely served and protected our country with two tours of duty in Iraq.

Emily Sullivan

CAD Technician

Emily Sullivan has been a part of the Harris Engineering team since 2007 as CAD Technician.
